Annuals in the Garden: Species and Varieties of Annual Flowers (Part 2)

Spread the love

Аnnuals collect no less exciting than perennials. Each species is a separate song, despite the fact that most of them are well known and do not need special representation, but is found on the sites less and less.

Annuals that do not require trouble with seedlings

That’s how imperceptibly we moved to annuals, which can be immediately sown into the soil, bypassing the laborious stage of growing seedlings. Among them, of course, Calendula officinalis. Remember the time when you just started to create a garden, because it was among the first flowers grown by you. So, do not retreat, not a step back!

And the sunflower? I think we love him not for the fact that you can, sitting on the bench, plenty eat their seeds, but for the fact that you can admire his Grand head, and with it and its more often turn to the sun.

Ordinary, as if migrated to us from the collective farm field Helianthus annuus plant to have something to eat the birds, and its varietal delights everyone can attach at its discretion. Many years do not go from the podium pure yellow Terry low (40 cm) ‘Teddy Bear’ and meter branched ‘Prado Red’, throwing from 5 to 15 stems, each of which will raise to the sun inflorescences (15 cm in diameter) with red edge and brown tubular flowers.

You can guess that the smell of Matthiola incana, so strong that gives “anxiety” even to the plant itself, and it is heard most clearly in the evening.

But interesting this kind of, unlike M. bicornis, not only the scent of, but and luxury inflorescences. Tatty same kind of Mattioli bicornuate, or night violet, pays off its unique tart flavor.

Another medium of fine, but more subtle and fresh scent — Reseda odorata. Also, by the way, with a rather nondescript flowers. Varieties it has, but they differ in the color of small flowers that do not make the weather, and therefore keep a reference to the smell.

In our time, not so often in nature you can find a sweet heart Centaurea cyanus-an ordinary plant that once littered the grain fields, because the fields are almost gone.

But to grow it in the garden is quite simple-for example, to make a small lawn of clover with white flowers and Centaurea cyanus. Clover will last more than one year, it is a perennial, and Centaurea will be properly sown himself.

If you want more colors, then get a mixture of ’Florence Series’, consisting of blue, lavender, pink, red, purple and white flowers. Something colorful wreaths whip up your children!

Tropaeolum majus, although its name comes from the Latin word “trophae” — “little trophy” — production for garden considerable. Among the varieties there are also curly-for vertical gardening, and semi — spreading, and dwarf-for flower beds and borders. And all bright flowers, abundant flowering, delicate pleasant aroma, beautiful rounded leaves, which are not only green, but also variegated. By the way, the leaves and flowers can be added to salads, they have a sharp, reminiscent of cress, taste.

Get your own Papaver rhoeas. And the fact that it is not in vain given such a species name, because you will remember many years after sowing.

And many others…

Nothing has been said about many annuals, which are just as remarkable, and which can also be sown directly into the ground. Among them, and openwork Cosmos bipinnatus, and Chrysanthemum tricolor with a dark middle, surrounded by colored circles, and the most delicate and in appearance and aroma Convolvulus tricolor, and lush Phlox drummondii, and orange rival poppy — Eschscholzia California, and Nigella Damascus, and Lavatera trimestris, and smelling of honey Alyssum maritimum and much, many more.

Unfortunately, I did not have enough space to tell you about them, but I hope you will sow them, because the size of your garden is much larger than this page.

Annuals successfully work in vertical gardening-Lathyrus odoratus, different types of Ipomoea, Phaseolus coccineus.

But in the role of ornamental deciduous plants annuals marked weaker, although such a brightness of color in perennials simply can not find. Take a look at the riot of varieties of Coleus blumei, a sad, almost black, Perilla frutescens var. nankinensis, exquisite silver lace Senecio cineraria, tropical look Ricinus communis

And pay attention to the plant for beginners topiary — “summer cypress” — Kochia scoparia var. trichophylla. It is possible to improve their skills. Make a mistake-it does not matter: a couple of weeks haircut will still have to repeat.

Even Brassica oleracea var. acephala f. crispa breeders managed to attach to the design. Each head is like a fairy openwork flower. And if, for example, in a large pot to plant them several, the flower will be a giant.

Thanks to annuals, your garden will look different every year. Moreover, the selection does not stand still, there are new shapes and colors… and who knows what will surprise us annuals next year?
