Tea-Hybrid Roses-Divas of the Pink Kingdom

Spread the love

Among the variety of rose varieties of this garden group (Rosa x hybrid-tea cv.), which make up half of the modern world assortment, are extremely good!

These are quite tall deciduous shrubs with beautiful large flowers, most of which have an exquisite aroma – these are not all the advantages of varieties of tea-hybrid roses, which have made them now the most popular and widespread in the culture.

Advantages of tea-hybrid roses

Excellent qualities of this group of garden roses abound, more than enough. Thanks to them, divas are considered a kind of standard of beauty.

  • rich color scheme of varieties;
  • the elegance of the buds;
  • large double flowers often with a high center;
  • the presence of aroma (some varieties do not smell);
  • resistance of the petals to burnout;
  • beautiful dark green leathery leaves with or without spangles;
  • ornamental shrub: erect (sometimes spreading), with strong shoots from 0.6 to 1.5 m high (2-4.9 ft);
  • very spectacular long (long), often remontant (repeated) flowering;
  • relatively resistant to diseases (powdery mildew and black spot), pests, weather conditions (rain);
  • many varieties are good at cutting (long standing in water).

The story of the origin of hybrid tea roses

The origin of tea-hybrid roses is due to 3 components:

  • remontant rose;
  • tea rose;
  • French breeder Guillot, who created the ancestor of the future garden group-the variety La France.

Thanks to this “batch”, the breed of tea and hybrid roses is visible in every variety. Seeing the beautiful flowers and inhaling their wonderful smell, you will guess that before you – divas.

The nuances of the fragrance of hybrid tea roses

Tea-hybrid roses are endowed not only with a rich palette of colors, but also with a luxurious smell that envelops you, enveloping you from head to toe, as if penetrating through every cell of the body. In it you can hear classic pink chords, and sensual spicy nuances, and fruity notes of citrus, peach, apple, and floral shades of violet, lilac, iris.

Some varieties have an unexpectedly tart cold taste. And only sometimes, bending over a flower, you are surprised to find that the rose does not smell!

That is intriguing. The fragrance of roses is quite complex, it consists of many components, which are a multi-layered pyramid. At its top are the most unstable tones, which quickly evaporate. They are published in nature citrus (lemon, mandarin, citrus bergamia, orange) and aromatic plants (anise, lemon balm, lavender). These light notes are caught only in the first seconds. The middle of the pyramid consists of 4 layers of less volatile odors. They are floral (lilac, jasmine, violet), green (ivy, parsley, grass), spicy (cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon). These are the main individual characteristics of the aroma of this variety. Finally, at the base of the pyramid are 2 layers of the deepest and most stable notes: forest notes (cedar, moss) and balsamic notes (vanilla, heliotrope).

But only a healthy rose will bloom and smell in your country house, so you need to:

  • choose the right varieties for your region;
  • plant correctly;
  • take good care of them.

Nuances of selection of varieties

Currently, about 40,000 varieties of roses are known, about half of which are tea-hybrid beauties. For the southern regions, almost anything that will please you will be suitable.

The nuances of the landing

The best time for planting tea-hybrid roses with an open root system is not only spring – from April 20 to May 20 (when the soil warms up to + 8°C…+10°C/46.4-50°F), but also autumn-from September 1 to October 10, until the onset of stable autumn frosts. They have time to take root well, as a rule, develop better and bloom earlier than those planted in spring or summer. When buying seedlings, choose those that have at least 2-3 stems. They should have a well-developed root system, without traces of fungal diseases. You can lightly scratch one of the roots with your nail to make sure that it is elastic, white.

A few days before planting roses, prepare planting pits with a size of 40x40x40 cm (1.3×1.3×1.3 ft). Fill them with water. After it is absorbed, pour in the humus mixed in half with the garden soil. Prepare the seedling: cut the roots so that their length is no more than 20-30 cm (7.9-11.8 in), leave 2-3 of the strongest shoots on the bush, shortening them so that each has 2-3 formed buds. Before planting, the roots are dipped in a clay mash: a mixture of clay and mullein (3:1). Plant so that the place of the eyepiece is 2-3 cm (0.8-1.2 in) below the surface of the soil. After planting and watering, the bush is covered with earth, so that only the upper part of the shoots remains open, and so it is left until spring. When planting, keep gaps of 35-60 cm (1.1-2 ft) between the bushes. If tea-hybrid roses are grown in a stamp culture, the distance between them should be 1-1.2 m (1.1-1.3 yard).

The nuances of caring for hybrid tea roses

After planting, be sure to water and start care, taking into account the features of this garden group.

  • do not require supports;
  • easily propagated by grafting;

  • only corrective pruning is needed, which is carried out mainly in the spring: well-developed shoots are shortened by 3-5 buds and weak ones are removed;

  • in spring and hot dry summers, regular watering and loosening of the soil is necessary;

  • for a lush and long-lasting flowering, top dressing is necessary at the beginning of the growth of shoots and before each wave of flowering (except in autumn) with complex and organic fertilizers; in summer, liquid cow top dressing is very effective;

Practical suggestion. Most tea-hybrid roses, which bloom all summer and autumn, are an irreplaceable wealth of mineral and organic substances. To feed a rose, you can simply scatter a handful of fertilizers around the bush and lightly stick it into the soil. If you take the time to dissolve the pellets in water, the plant will get food faster and, accordingly, will be more likely to react to it. You can not do without weeding weeds.

  • the petals of most varieties of tea-hybrid roses are white, cream, light yellow, light pink in color with the onset of cold nights are covered with crimson spots, which reduces the decorative effect.

In addition, it is necessary to remove withered flowers and inflorescences, remove fallen leaves, inspect for pests and diseases. If necessary, immediately apply chemical treatment.

Practical suggestion. From hybrid tea roses, not only the withered flower is removed, but along with it, the two upper real leaves are cut directly above the third. The bud in the leaf sinus is well developed and will break out very soon.

The nuances of the fight against pests and diseases

Mostly roses suffer from aphids and napadaniye lesion black spot and powdery mildew.
With aphids, you have to fight as soon as you find it: sucking the juice from the leaves, it carries viral diseases. Ladybugs come to the rescue, which successfully eat aphids. In severe cases, you can apply a patch for roses (Celaflor), which is safe for beneficial insects and effective against aphids for 2 months. The patch is glued to the main shoots, the active substance gets inside, together with the juice is transferred to the leaves and destroys the aphids.

To prevent the appearance of black spots on roses, you need a well-balanced plant diet during the summer. Against the black spot (or Marconi) of the rose, spraying the bushes in early spring (when the buds open) and twice (before flowering) is effective. If necessary, the treatment with the selected drug is repeated again in late summer or early autumn. For prevention: infusions of tobacco, garlic, onion; removal and burning of fallen leaves.

Practical suggestion. All infusions and decoctions are used on the day of their preparation. When working with them, it is necessary to protect the eyes, mouth, nose to avoid irritation of the mucous membrane. Plants used for decoctions and infusions can be prepared in advance, dried and stored for a year.

Against powdery mildew of roses, treatments in spring and summer are effective 1 time in 10-12 days with 0.5% colloidal sulfur. In addition, do not forget to cut and destroy the affected shoots (in autumn and early spring), leaves, fruits.

Nuances of removing thickets and cutting roses for a bouquet

Wild shoots in tea-hybrid roses must be removed-it takes a lot of energy from the plant. Cut it off with a sharp clean knife at the base, exposing the root neck (the junction of the root with the stem). After pruning, the wound is treated with antiseptic garden paint or green paint, the ground is covered and compacted.

Practical suggestion. Many varieties of hybrid tea roses form several buds on the shoots. To get a bigger flower, leave only one bud, but if you need a flowering shrub, leave it as it is.

When cutting roses for a bouquet, it is important not to weaken the bush. It is no more than a third of its length. The incision should pass through the kidney, facing outward

It is better not to cut flowers for a bouquet with plants of the first year of life. Moreover, it is better not to let these bushes bloom until August, because after flowering, growth will stop. Therefore, in June, pinch all the buds to them.

Practical suggestion. Roses will last longer in the water if the cut of the stem is oblique and long (no more than 3 cm/1.2 in). Add 1 teaspoon of sugar and fresh lemon juice to the water. After 4 days, the nutrient solution is replaced with a new one.

Nuances of preparation of tea-hybrid roses for winter

Some roses are not covered or mulched, except for the first 2-3 years after planting, with an organic substrate (for example, humus).

Preparation for the wintering of tea-hybrid roses begins in the summer: from mid-August, fertilizing with nitrogen fertilizers is stopped. Excess moisture delays aging, so reduce watering and loosening. While the weather is warm, do not cut off the faded shoots, remove only the faded flowers, so as not to stimulate the growth of new shoots, which can weaken the plant. Shelter starts no earlier than November, with the onset of constant frosts -5°C…-7°C (23-19.4°F). However, by October 15, the mound had risen to a height of about 25 cm (9.8 in). On the hilled bushes, sprinkle dry leaves with a layer of 20 cm (7.9 in), put spruce twigs and put an arc on top, on which they pull the spunbond.
It is not recommended to use sawdust and leaves as a covering material-they can become a source of pests and diseases. You can use overwintered roses under a frame of thick wire covered with thick paper and polyethylene, but during a thaw, the shelter must be ventilated so as not to create favorable conditions for the development of pathogenic microorganisms.

Nuances removing the cover with roses

At the end of March, when the temperature stops falling below -7°C…-8°C (19.4-17.6°F) and the ground begins to thaw, the shelter of the roses is removed. You need to open it gradually. Some growers immediately take out of the shelter: leaves and so on, and the top (dark paper, spunbond, etc.) save it so that the rose does not get a lot of sunlight at once and does not burn it. Others remove the top cover, but keep the twigs, which are removed gradually. With the onset of stable warm weather (only light frosts at night), the coating can be completely removed. This should be done in the evening, and better – in cloudy weather.

That is intriguing

Hybrid tea roses have been grown in the Crimea for centuries. They were particularly popular in Livadia. Archival materials allow us to present the decorative plantings of the Italian courtyard of the period 1911-1914 in the form of a flower Rabatte, completely filled with roses of various varieties.

Nuances of placement of tea-hybrid roses in the cottage

These are real “aristocrats” who know their worth, so they are often assigned front seats. Planted in mixed borders, in groups on the lawn or near coniferous trees.

At the same time, it is very important to make roses in height and color combination, choosing nuanced or contrasting combinations. A detailed description of the varieties of hybrid tea roses in the following articles will help you make the right choice.
