Botanical reference book
Allium schoenoprasum, sin. A. cepa var. aggregatum-a perennial (grown as an annual, biennial) strongly branched plant with a false stem and bulb, forming up to 150 or more branches by the fourth year of life. The leaves are tubular, unlike the Welsh onion and wood onion, they are 2-3 times thinner, 25-45 cm (9.8-17.7 in) long. Flower arrows are thin, 30-50 cm (11.8-19.6 in), delicate, very juicy. The flowers are narrow-ringed, pink, purple (there are forms with white flowers) in thick, spherical or oval umbels, 2.5 cm (1 in) in diameter; they bloom in May-June in the second year of life. The fruits ripen in July-August. Decorative variety ‘Forescate’ (more energetic, 60 cm (2 ft) high, light purple-pink flowers).
Accommodation in a garden bed
The architectonics of the charming spherical inflorescences of Allium Schoenoprasum in flower petioles are a delicate pink-purple composition, and the dark green graceful leaves add a cheerful spring shade. The greatest decorative effect is during flowering.
With a long-term method of cultivation, it is recommended to choose a place taking into account long-term growth, since the plants increase in size every year, forming powerful dense bushes that converge in the aisles (at the same time, a dense turf is formed). As an exclusively ornamental plant, it can be planted as a border along garden paths leading to the house, or on the edges of flower beds, as well as mixborders to enhance the style of landscape design.
In one place, it grows up to 5-6 (10) years, for greater productivity, it is recommended to grow for 3 years. Best fit pattern: 45-60 x 25-30 cm (17.7-23.6 x 9.8-11.8 in). In an annual culture, seedlings are planted according to the scheme 15 x 3-4 cm (5.9×1.2-1.6 in), the depth of the bulbs is 0.5-1 cm/0.2-0.4 in (in the open ground). Prefers neutral, fertile soils with high humidity.
