Some years I pursued the idea to create a flower garden of ornamental onions (Allium). It all started with a casual acquaintance with these plants, and when I learned how diverse the world of Allium literally lost the rest, and then, last fall in the new garden I have my idea implemented. And while waiting to come down the snow and began to see the results of this work, will talk a little about the types that are in my garden and the garden live for a long time.
Absolute favorite — chives. It is a source of early greens. Younger pen very tasty, almost no bitterness. But if chives regularly cut and well watered, the crops can be removed literally from snow to snow. And even in winter: this plant is highly susceptible to distillation in the home. Only necessary to store several pots for planting if you want the greens have been all winter: the house of chives is enough only for two harvests, after which he should again give the rest to spring planting back on the garden.
And yet — it is a versatile ornamental plant. It can be planted shrubs, a strip in the ridges or along the border of the flower bed.
This is convenient because it is growing incredibly fast. Dividing one adult Bush can make a border with a length of two meters or more, and is literally a week after landing, he cheerfully turned green.
The only drawback: at the time of flowering the pen begins to turn yellow, wither and chives may look ugly. But this “burn” is easy to help: just completely cut the plant, leaving no more than 5 cm above the soil surface. The day will be the first young feathers, and very quickly the attractiveness of the plants will recover.
Another remarkable plant — Allium aflatunense. It leaves even the end of winter do not wait.
The leaves are wide, fleshy, juicy, with the aroma and taste of garlic. I like to use them in salads, especially in spring, the body glad any greens, later appears high stalks. The leaves at this time is not consumable, they start fading as soon as the flowers bloom. So this bow it is advisable to plant on a background of flower beds or in the center (if the view from all sides), but at the right time of their unsightly was hidden by other plants. Although, if you regularly snap off the foliage fades is not a burden, you can leave the shrub and in sight.
In early spring appear and the rosettes of foliage Allium rosenbachianum. Is it flowers modestly peeking around the powerful Bush Allium aflatunense in the photo above. And that’s how it looks in early spring.
Inflorescence-balls they are very similar, differ probably only in size. They are good, and in the garden and in bouquets, and they can be used as dried flowers.
Unfortunately, these onions decorative effect is of short duration: their leaves wither in early summer as tulips, daffodils and other bulbs. But the Allium nutans — stable ornamental plant.
And also very useful: the leaves are rich in iron and vitamin C, they are recommended to use with iron deficiency anemia. And it does not irritate the stomach, but because it can eat even those who do not consume onion due to diseases of the gastrointestinal tract. Allium nutans used in Tibetan medicine.
This plant does not form bulbs, but instead there is only a small thickening in the lower part of the stem. The leaves had a flat, juicy and delicious; they also have a garlic aroma as the leaves Allium aflatunense, but, unlike him, Allium nutans not coarse. Blooming Allium nutans later than the other onions in the second half of the summer.
Despite the fact that the plant is quite demanding to moisture and food, I have it successfully live on this small hill, where the food is all right, but moisture in the summer heat is not always enough.
And yet it is, like Chives, can be grown at home, getting greens all year round. In addition to such a beautiful, delicious and healthy — bows, there is a great variety of decorative onions. For example, undersized Allium oreophilum.
Or this Allium caeruleum.
