Proven Varieties of Tomatoes: Practical Large-Fruited

Spread the love

Every year I spend time experimenting and trying to grow some new product. I think almost every summer resident has a favorite plant, in my case it is tomatoes. Their cultivation really captivates me and brings satisfaction. Therefore, most of all I am interested in new varieties of tomatoes, especially practical.

Each gardener has his own idea of what practical varieties. Someone bulk grow for pickling, and then it requires appropriate tomato: medium size, sturdy, tight, together ripening. For example, I harvested tomatoes in any other way, I prefer to use a large fruit. These tomatoes usually go well in the salad: tear one gram 600-700, and cut from the whole family.

That is why I am attracted to varieties of tomatoes with large fruits. Although, to be honest, I like them and because of the rave ooh Aah yeah, friends and neighbors. I want to share with you the experience of growing some of them that were planted in the greenhouse and outdoors.

Delicious

Tomato ‘Delicious’ refers to varieties of American selection, it can be called old: it was brought in 1964 in the famous company Burpee. The plant is indeterminate, in the greenhouse during the season grows more than two meters. The vegetation period 110-120 days.

The sheet type standard, the fruit is a nice regular shape, flat-round. The color is orange-red, the tomato is glossy. The ripe fruit is not has hard inclusions and green hats, kept pace evenly. On the cut shows that the seed cavity is small enough, that is, “water with seeds” bit.

The taste can be called old-fashioned, with a little sourness. These are classic tomatoes, a reliable variety. Fruit weight ranged from 400 to 600 g.

I grew this variety in the greenhouse in two stems and I must say that he did not require special care. The formation of Stepsons is very moderate, no diseases were observed. And even then, when tomatoes on the next bed (and in the greenhouse it is very close) began to suffer from Phytophthora, on ‘Delicious’ it was not. However, for prevention, I treated all the plants in the greenhouse as soon as the fungus was seen.

Homestead

The Homestead variety type was developed in 1960 in America (Florida). He was very highly rated, and there are many varieties. I grew two types. I can not mention that in the packet the seeds were poured from the heart, I have never come across such a generous package.

‘Pink giant’

The plant is determinant, tall. In the open ground tomatoes grew up to one and a half meters, and greenhouse specimens stretched to the ceiling (about 190 cm), after which I completed them in the usual manner for maturation.

Leaf shape standard, and the fruit is flat-round, slightly bumpy, pink. The growing period is 90-100 days. The photo shows that red ripe tomatoes on top are more dense green brush strokes, but very little woody core there.

The taste is mild, the pulp is smooth enough, but the ripe tomatoes become a little grainy. The fruits are exceptionally meaty, seed chambers are small and the seed is very little, the cut is clearly visible.

The weight of tomatoes ranged from 500 to 700 g, although, frankly, I expected more, given the promises of the manufacturer: the package clearly says that the weight from 400 to 1000 g.

In mid-summer was seen late blight, but after a single treatment the outbreak was stopped, suffered quite a bit of fruit, and they a little. However, I want to say that this sort of definitely practical and productive, to grow I’ll have that and all the advice.

‘Red giant’

This variety I really liked for the excellent taste and fertility, although I must say that the fruits in the picture and in real life a little different in shape, and other nuances of cultivation were. The plant is indeterminate, extremely powerful and prone to chewing. The vegetation period is 110-115 days.

At an equal footing with other varieties of conditions (in a greenhouse), it has grown a huge compound leaves up to 60 cm, had a strong thick stems.

Tomato continued to grow all season, it was not stopped by the upper vaults of the greenhouse, and I had to tie the stems along the ceiling. Length of the plant by the end of August was reached, I think, not less than 2.7 m. in addition, it required regular clarification, for which I shortened the leaves by two thirds even before the time when they became can be removed completely.

Grown in two or three stalks, each brush was growing 3-4 fruit weight 300 to 400 g packet of seeds photography is clearly flat-rotund fruit, but I have grown tomatoes a few pear-shaped.

Their quality was excellent, the flesh is amazingly smooth and juicy, but not watery. The taste is mild, non-acidic, the aroma is clear and very pleasant. On the cut you can see that the seed chambers are small enough, the fruits are fleshy. Kept up every tomato evenly, no hard inclusions, no cracking.

As I mentioned above, at the top of the summer Phytophthora visited the greenhouse, and the tomatoes of the Homestead variety — both pink and red-got sick. None of the other varieties (and I had a dozen) was hurt. After a single treatment, the issue was removed, suffered very few fruits.

Despite some features of agricultural machinery, I myself will necessarily grow this variety in the future and I can recommend to all other fans. Unfortunately, I had little information about these tomatoes last spring. Now I will consider their features and in advance I will take to these plants a place wider and such that it was convenient to tie them to a ceiling of a greenhouse.

And what varieties of large-fruited tomatoes can you recommend? Share your experience in the comments.
