Beautiful bright Torenia came to us from Southeast Asia. It is especially original among garden plants with bell-shaped flowers: they resemble gloxinia.

Torenia belongs to the Figworth family. The color of the petals varies from white to piercing blue, the height of the plant is from 10 to 30 centimeters (3.9-11.8 inches), depending on the variety, two-color hybrids are produced. The color of the throat may be contrasting, with a bright signal spot. The foliage is very lush, the shape of the plate is similar to the Impatient leaf.

Not to say that this is an unpretentious flower, but even a novice gardener will be able to grow it. The main requirement for preserving the decorative effect is to maintain a stable moisture content of the undercoat and protect it from excessive heat. And the” weak point ” in torenii — foliage. It is she who suffers from the vagaries of the weather: the scorching sun, strong drafts, heavy rains, in such cases, the plant can lose its leaves.

Because of the delicate foliage, torus is usually grown in containers, hanging baskets (there are ampel varieties) or at home. And here it should be noted one important feature: each bright bell, very long keeps on the bush — from 10 to 15 days. The flowering time of the plants is long, from three to six months, and is ideal for decorating the ceremonial area.

Torenia is grown, as a rule, from seeds, but it is also possible to propagate by cuttings. The age of the seedlings at the time of planting in the ground or pots should be two and a half months. Torii are thermophilic and do not tolerate even the slightest frost. Mass flowering of the plant begins at the age of 90-100 days.

The most common are Torenia Fournieri and Torenia flava. Also quite popular varieties are the following:

  • Summer Wave variety series. Suitable for hanging baskets and where reinforcement is required. Plants have long drooping stems, react quite calmly to temperature changes;
  • Douchessa. A very diverse variety of torenia Fournier. The height of the bush is 20-30 cm (7.9-11.8 inches), the shape is almost spherical. The throat color is white.
