Proper Operation Of a Chainsaw: The Main Mistakes (Part 2)

4. Forgot about the chain lubricant

When filling the saw with a fuel mixture, remember about the oil for lubricating the chain. If it is not enough, it is better to top up to a full tank. After all, the fuel and oil tanks are emptied during operation almost simultaneously. At least you will not have to be distracted by refueling one or the other.

Insufficient lubrication of the chain does not bode well. Possible consequences are increased wear of the drive sprocket, severe tire wear, and the chain will stretch and blunt more likely. The oil tank plug is usually located in the front (but the location may vary for different models). Unscrew the plug, check the level, fill it to full.

The lubricant for the chain, as you have already guessed, can also not be any — only the product recommended by the manufacturer or high-quality oil from a good manufacturer. For example, mineral transmission oil for chainsaw chains Bio Sage-Kettenoil. It provides good lubrication of the chain, protects it from wear and can be used at temperatures up to -30 ° C (whereas only summer oils thicken in winter, and they have to be diluted).

Proper Operation Of a Chainsaw: The Main Mistakes (Part 2)

There is a group of convinced craftsmen who pour the same training. I haven’t tried it myself and probably won’t. You can try some inexpensive remedy, but if it turns out to be too liquid, with poor adhesion (the ability to stick to the surface and stay on it), it will only spray around, and not lubricate the chain as it should. In this case, your chainsaw is waiting for all the same consequences — increased wear of parts.

There is another unpleasant story — when there is oil in the tank, but the chain is not lubricated. The chain and tire begin to get very warm. As a result, rapid wear of both chains and tires. The reason is most likely in the fuel pump: either it is clogged, or the feed worm has broken. It is necessary to disassemble, clean — or change a failed part.

5. Clean the air filter? You haven’t heard!

It happens that after very intensive work, the chainsaw suddenly stalls under load. The engine starts to “choke”. It’s time to remember about the air filter and clean it. It is not worth working with a clogged one even at low loads, and at high loads it will not work.

I have two chainsaws from a well-known manufacturer. Each has its own device. I’ll show you how to get to the filter in both cases.

Proper Operation Of a Chainsaw: The Main Mistakes (Part 2)

In the first one, to get to the filter, you just need to remove the top cover by unscrewing the screw, similar to the tank plug. Under it we find an air filter.

In the second model, the top cover is attached to three plastic latches. Unfasten them, remove the lid. To remove the air filter, it is necessary to unfasten the metal latch. As you can see, he’s completely different here.

In my examples, both filters are clean. But if you see during the inspection that the filter cloth has turned gray or black, then the filter will need to be cleaned. It is enough to “stretch” it in warm soapy water, rinse it well and dry it.

6. Did not change the fuel filter

The fuel filter protects the carburetor from getting into it all the dirt that ends up in the fuel tank. This part, unlike the air filter, is not cleaned or washed. Strictly replacement is needed here. An ordinary summer resident is not a lumberjack — he does not use a chainsaw very often and intensively, therefore, he is allowed to change this consumable quite rarely, once every 1.5-2 years. But the problem is that not every ordinary summer resident, unlike a logger, knows about the existence of this filter (well, true, there are such cases). Or — maybe just forget about it. And a chainsaw with a clogged fuel filter suffers.

So, this part is “hanging out” on the gas pipeline tube in the tank. We take it out using tweezers. If the filter turned gray, it most likely began to clog. I operate the chainsaw quite a bit and have not encountered a clogged fuel filter. He can get seriously clogged only after very long work. The lumberjack is definitely familiar with this problem. And a simple summer resident will get to know her faster if he starts experimenting with the good old practice.

When the filter is clogged, the fuel mixture does not flow well into the carburetor. As a result, the saw stalls or does not start. The price of the parts — even for a decent chainsaw — is slightly less than $ 3. The main thing is to find the right one and have one new one to replace.

7. Non-compliance with safety regulations

Unexpectedly, everyone can get a log on the head, tested on themselves. Chainsaw manufacturers strongly recommend using protection when working — gloves, a helmet with a special mask and special boots (with a reinforced nose). This is a very important safety rule that many people neglect. Yes, many of my friends, buying a chainsaw, do not even think about buying these accessories. A natural desire to save money! I must admit, I didn’t think much about them myself. But I was lucky: I was given both a helmet and gloves.

Proper Operation Of a Chainsaw: The Main Mistakes (Part 2)

A helmet with a protective mask really came in handy for me. It was necessary to cut down one of the trunks of a large apple tree (about 6 m high) at the level of two meters. He put on a helmet, gloves, climbed on a ladder. The sawn trunk caught on branches and hung over my head, then slid down and rested against my helmet. At that moment, the recommendation about special protection finally reached me.

Special gloves, among other things, are also comfortable. They are good to work in cold weather: hands do not freeze. They were also very useful when sawing rough boards. Gloves perfectly protect against splinters, which necessarily cling when working with bare hands.

The protective mask is made of fine metal mesh. You can see everything through it, it’s easy to breathe in it, and most importantly, it doesn’t fog up. I even started wearing a helmet with a mask when I work with a powerful trimmer — it’s more convenient than wearing protective glasses. It perfectly protects against small stones escaping from under the coil and everything else that arrives when mowing weeds.

There are a number of the most primitive mistakes in the work, without which more than one beginner often cannot do. Well, who didn’t catch a nail with a chain, “dissecting” old boards or logs! Someone probably tried to wind up the tool on the weight (just like in the movies), which is not recommended at all, since there is a high probability of injury, and the saw may not start the first time. With an emphasis on a horizontal surface, it is both more convenient and safer. And what mistakes did you make — and how did you correct the consequences?
