The window is very easy to make. The frame is already lacquered under pine or oak. We do it without using machines. We use only hand tools. The cost of the window at the output is less than $10. The window looks one hundred percent! This is not a fantasy or a dream.
I dug through a bunch of videos in which serious guys with very serious machines conjure, measure fractions of millimeters and degrees, and the crown of their titanic efforts is not a spaceship, but a stool, a coffee table or some other simple thing. It’s cool to thump under such videos, realizing that you are powerless without such equipment. And watching how they mill and turn is very exciting… you can endlessly look at the fire and how someone works hard.
How to assemble a window frame from a door frame
But we live in a time of DIY culture. There are many construction supermarkets, in the assortment of which there are often interesting things. These little things can greatly facilitate the life of a self-made person. In my case, I bought wooden blanks for door frames to make a window. They will greatly facilitate my task. And they will practically negate the advantage of craftsmen who have a workshop with a fleet of machine tools. Besides, there is a choice. You can buy unpainted blanks, you can – already varnished or veneered with oak veneer and varnished, such I purchased. There was a big discount on them: apparently, the product was stale, and no one bought it. The price was less than $ 2 for a 2-meter billet.
For sawing and cutting, you can perfectly use a manual electric jigsaw. It will probably be easier for a beginner to use a regular hand hacksaw.
When making the frame, I did not use a connection on the mustache: such a connection requires an accurate cut of the workpiece at 45 degrees. This requires additional equipment and skills. I went the other way. I measured the thick part of the workpiece. I marked this distance on the lower part.
You can not measure it — but just attach it and mark it.
Now we make an inscription of the veneer with a hacksaw on the metal, so as not to damage it.
Next, we make a cut with a regular hacksaw.
Then we cut off all the “excess” with a chisel — it is necessary to cut off only 2 of the 4 blanks of the frame, at the top and bottom.
Now the parts fit together without any problems.
The parts for assembling the frame are ready.
We proceed to the connection. We will use furniture screws-screeds-confirmates.
They will securely tighten the frame. To make holes for them, I use a special drill for confirmations. It can be replaced with two conventional drills of 5 and 7 mm. You will also need a hexagon bit in order to tighten the confirmations.
We connect the frame with two confirmations at the joint.
The frame is assembled. Now we need to degrease the contact points of the glass. We apply silicone sealant around the perimeter and install the double-glazed window in the frame.
In the windows, I use light single-chamber double-glazed windows to relieve the load from the second floor.
We insert the double-glazed window into the frame
Where can I find double-glazed windows at a very favorable price? It is necessary not to be lazy and visit the nearest window production to make sure (to your advantage) that there are jambs everywhere. Somewhere the double-glazed windows made a mistake with the dimensions, somewhere — a minor defect… Window makers will be very happy to sell such a product for half of its wholesale price. So I bought double-glazed windows for the future.
I determined the length of the horizontal blanks by adding two thicknesses of the door jamb in a narrow place to the width of the double-glazed window, and threw 5 mm. The vertical size was calculated the same way.
For gluing the double-glazed window, I used transparent silicone — and silicone holds tightly.
The window bead has a purely decorative function.
The bead was tinted and lacquered before installation.
The window turned out to be 58 cm by 108 cm with a double-glazed window size of 53 × 103 cm. The area is about 0.5 m². I will try to estimate the prices in conventional American units.
So, we multiply the window area by the cost of a cellmate in our region — at least $ 18 per 1 m². We divide it in half — we get less than $ 5, since I bought an illiquid. Two blanks of the door frame — $ 3.6, more confirmations, a bead… We get: I spent less than $10 on making one blind window. I deliberately do not make the windows swing because of the savings on accessories. I will make a ventilation system without using vents.
