The theater, as you know, begins with a hanger, but what does the garden begin with? We offer our own version: the garden begins with a bench. Or from any other adapted seat.
Pay attention to the behavior of the guest who first came to your garden: his gait is uncertain, his speech is broken and consists of interjections, his eyes are looking for something. In fact, your visitor is searching for a place to sit.
The guest can understand: he is tired from the road, dragged a heavy bag, he needs to catch his breath and look around. And the impression of your garden will depend, first, on how soon the visitor will be able to place his body to rest; secondly, how comfortable the seat offered to him will be; and finally, third, on the perfection of the view that will appear before the sitter.
This is my garden, and I don’t have time to sit around, I have a lot to do. In our long wanderings in search of the garden of Eden, we did indeed come to areas where there were no benches, no logs, or any of the above. To be honest, in such gardens, the conversation does not add up, the delight from the sight of even the most exquisite and rare plants fades, and the time drags on for a long time.
The presence of one, or better, several seats equipped for sitting, as we believe, does not mean negligence and laziness of the owners. On the contrary, their absence hints at the fact that the gardener does not use very important practical and psychological resources that are hidden in the garden bench.
It will give you extra strength, even if you really have no time to use it. Let your hands be busy with endless weeding and transplanting, you will be supported only by the thought that if you wanted to, you could sit down. Alone or with a book, maybe with her husband or children, with a friend, with knitting…
The bench, even if it remains empty and lonely, will help you to dream by its very existence, will awaken your imagination, will make you think about its predecessors, with which your best memories are connected. This is the psychological effect of having a bench in the garden.
From a practical point of view, it is also far from useless. Imagine that you did sit down for a moment. So what? You immediately jump up, because it is from here, from the bench, that any violation of garden order is most noticeable: you can see an impudent weed, an uneven edge of the lawn, a plant in urgent need of supports…
Another aspect is design. Please note that from the sitting position, the neighbor’s areas are much less visible, and you feel more protected from other people’s eyes, other people’s clutter, and fences.
So don’t neglect the bench! We assign it such an outstanding role in the garden reality is not only because we are going to come to visit you and want to feel comfortable (although this can not be excluded!).
We believe that the high philosophical meaning of the garden is revealed only to those who have a cherished place in the garden, where you can not only relax, but contemplate and reflect.
