In February, You Can Start Cutting. Experiments With Blackberries.

In February, the day begins to noticeably increase, and you can already start cutting. Now gardeners have a lot of time, there is also a stock of it. If you fail, you can try to grow a seedling again. Therefore, I start rooting cuttings in the winter.

I will show you a method that gives a very good result. For example, I will take blackberries, long branches of which I cut off during the day in the garden and put in water. In the warmth, they awoke and were filled with moisture.

We will need:

  • transparent plastic bottle;
  • knife;
  • sharp pruning shears;
  • plastic bag;
  • rooting agent (powder);
  • Coco substrate.

Why do I take coconut substrate? It is very loose and water-intensive, during the rooting of cuttings, we do not need to water them.

Progress of work

In a plastic bottle on its long side, cut out a rectangular lid. Get the container. In the lower part of it, pour a well-moistened coconut substrate to about half the volume.

Cut the cuttings of such a size that their length is shorter than the prepared container. In the case of blackberries, I got segments with 3-4 buds. Above the upper kidney, make a straight cut; under the lower, retreating about 1 cm, cut at an angle of 45°. Under each kidney on the stalk, you need to break the bark a little: it is enough to scrape with a knife.

Then we powder all sections and places of bark disturbance with a rooting agent. We do the same with the other cuttings.

Cuttings processed in this way are placed in a prepared container in a horizontal position and completely covered with a wet coconut substrate. We cover everything with a lid and fix it, for example, with a stationery elastic band.

We put our greenhouse in a plastic bag and leave it in a warm dark place (+18…+24°C). After a while, you will see that each Bud has a sprout; then the greenhouse will need to be exposed to the light.

Do not rush to plant young plants, let them grow and get stronger. Only when you see through the transparent plastic of the container that quite a lot of roots have formed, you can carefully get the mother stalk, cut it and plant small plants in separate containers.

I liked this method because it takes the least time and is quite convenient.
