Wild Growth on a Grafted Tree Peonies

Not only with roses, there are cases when the rosehip rhizome can drown out the cultural grafting of roses. It happens, for example, with tree-like peonies.

In recent years, a lot of planting material of these beautiful shrubs has appeared, in particular from China. In most cases, these are woody varieties grafted on the roots of herbaceous peonies. Recommendations for planting the manufacturer recommends burying the place of vaccination to a depth of 15 cm (5.9 inch). This is done so that the roots of the herbaceous peony or tree peony that have developed in the donor gradually go on their own.

But it happens that the root of the donor does not have enough food, which can give a grafted peony tree. And then it thinns out its own buds-sprouts that are often so strong that they can destroy the grafted plant, taking its food completely.

In such cases, you need to carefully dig up the plant, find the place of grafting and the place where it gave shoots of the root rootstock. Carefully and as close to the root as possible, remove the growth, part of the root, if it is large enough. This part is really trying to grow a Chinese peony, the rootstocks of which are sometimes also very interesting.

So it was with my Kinkaku peonies. Last year, a beautiful flower bloomed here for the first time.

Over the summer, he grew another decent thread, this spring, two buds appeared on the bush. But suddenly one of them bloomed and … disappointed me immensely. Simple simple flower, petals in one row, short. Maybe if they covered the whole bush, it would look beautiful. But I was waiting for Kinkaku! I didn’t have time to perform the operation to separate the bushes, but I will try to do it soon.
